What Are jorabs:

Jorabs are socks, or knee socks (whichever you prefer). However, when it comes to jorabs, a different knitting technique as well as different qualities are used.
Jorabs outwear any other socks and have strong warming effects. Very thick, coarse yarn made from sheep wool is used, which is further processed in a special way, and only then, coloured.

Dagestan-style (Kubachi) jorabs are thick ethnic hand-knitted socks with the heel and sole done in tight stitch, which are normally worn instead of slippers or which can be used as socks even in the most severe cold! These authentic jorabs are very warm and thick. Double jacquard provides increased durability.

The amazing ornament of the craftsmen of the Dagestani aul - Kubachi - illustrates the history of the evolution of the art of the Near East, from the development of the fine form in the early Middle Ages to the traditional ornaments of the late Middle Ages. A wide range of colours makes jorabs an indispensable accessory to your wardrobe!

History of Jorabs

Jorab knitting is an ancient craft, which is inherited and very much appreciated. It is traditional for the people in the Caucasus (Dagestan, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia);  the mountain regions of Central Asia (Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan); in Iran; and in the mountain areas of Pakistan. This craft is also found in the Balkan countries, such as Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Serbia, and Turkey.

It is hard to determine where exactly it originated, e.g., the oldest known references of the jorab with the design supporting the foot and intricate patterns go back to the 12th century, found in Egypt. Today, the most common opinion on the place of origin of the jorab is India.

Remarkable women have always lived in Kubachi. They continue the ancient tradition, having mastered the art of jorab knitting. The tradition of jorab knitting is not dead owing to the glorious, highly respected women of the mountainous Dagestani aul - Kubachi - located 180 km from Makhachkala and about 70 km west of Derbent in the Dahadaevskij Raion of Dagestan at an altitude of 1,600 m above sea level. The current name of the aul is of Turkish origin, dating back to the 16th century. Before that, it used to be known under the Persian name of Zirehiran, which literally means maker of chain mail. It was first mentioned in the 9th century. In the 11th century, an Arab historian Al Masudi wrote: "Somewhere in the mountains of the Caucasus, a society has been lost, Zirehiran, as they name it, that pays tribute to the towns of Derbent and Baku." However, there is still no reliable data about the settlement; all we know is that the territory of the present Kubachi used to be part of the long-vanished Caucasian Albania.

Etymology of the Word jorab

The word jorab originates from the Persian جوراب (jourab), the general meaning of which is socks. Other well-known variants are çorap (Turkish), chorap (Bulgarian, Macedonian) charape (Serbian), Corab (Azerbaijan), Čarapa (Croatian), and Ҷӯrob (Tajik).

The same concept is also known by such local terms as kyulyutar in Lezghian, tturs in Tsakhur, and unq’al in the Arabian language of Dagestan.
